Georgia island comes of age for Hollywood

Little-known Tybee Island, on Georgia’s protected coastline, finds itself in the Hollywood spotlight with the release of Touchstone’s latest movie, The Last Song, starring Mylie Cyrus, Greg Kinnear and Kelly Preston.
Tybee Island, a small laid-back beach community 20 miles east of historic Savannah, is a small sandy oasis in the vast savannah of salt marsh, in the east Georgia lowlands at the mouth of the Savannah River.

With three miles of pristine beachfront, the island features small hotels, quaint bed & breakfasts, and holiday rental homes and cottages.

Georgia’s coast is a place of natural, fragile ecosystems where wildlife along miles of shoreline and dunes of Georgia’s barrier islands is protected.

Tybee Island’s beaches are important nesting areas for endangered sea turtles, returning to Georgia’s beaches each year from early May to late October.

Nature lovers can join birding and wildlife trails as well as dolphin-spotting tours. Kayaks allow visitors to quietly view wildlife in their natural setting while the Tybee Island pier offers great fishing and views. There is also a Tybee Island Marine Science Center.

Filming for The Last Song, a coming-of-age drama based on best-selling author Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name, took place last summer with much of it shot on the island's beach and pier. It will be released in cinemas across the UK on April 30.
